The University of Bihar (now named as Babasahed Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University) was founded in 1952 with its jurisdiction extending to the State except the areas under Patna Municipal Corporation. In the year 1992 - The name of Bihar University was changed to BABASAHEB BHIMRAO AMBEDKAR BIHAR UNIVERSITY, MUZAFFARPUR and since then it is known as B.R. Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzaffarpur. The Prakrit and Jain Research Institute, Vaishali (Muzaffarpur) is attached to the university.
